MYRIAH drifted between sleep and wakefulness, replaying the events of the previous day. Anthony’s profession of love followed by the near-kiss in the kitchen stuck out most. If Wes hadn’t unwittingly intervened, Anthony would’ve kissed her, and that would’ve been a disaster.

She couldn’t have stopped herself from responding as her heart ached to. Claiming otherwise would be a lie of epic proportions. Then she’d probably have ended up unconscious at his feet. How romantic. If it wasn’t so serious, it’d be funny. Swooning at his feet like some woman of centuries past, oxygen-deprived by a too-tight corset.

She thought back to when their relationship had been so very different. Everything had changed in one evening….

“The view from here is incredible!” Sitting in the middle of the truck’s bench seat next to Anthony, Myriah had leaned against the dashboard to get a fuller view out the windshield. Clouds filled the view below them, as well as above. “The storm looks so cool from here.”

“I hoped it would wait so we could watch the sun set. Sunsets can be amazing from here.” Anthony’s jaw clenched.

She grinned. He didn’t like when things didn’t go as planned. “I’m sure the storm is sorry it interrupted your plans.” No sooner did the words leave her mouth than rain pattered on the roof of the truck. In mere seconds, it became a torrential downpour.

“I’m doing it again, aren’t I?” He gave Myriah a sheepish look she could barely see in the rapidly fading light.

“Yes, but that’s okay.” She hugged Anthony’s arm and leaned her cheek against his shoulder. “I love you anyway.”

“Mom accuses me of trying to be God,” he murmured.

“I’m sure megalomania is perfectly normal for many aspiring doctors,” she teased.

“You’re not helping,” he growled. A current of humor underlined his tone.

“Hm. I think I’m losing my touch.” Myriah trailed a finger up his arm.

“Unlikely.”

She grinned at the sudden huskiness in his voice.

“We’re stuck here for a while,” he said after a few silent minutes. The rain didn’t appear to be letting up. “I can’t see to back out and go back down the mountain. Dad’ll have my head if I wreck the truck trying anything stupid. The storm shouldn’t stick around too long. Hopefully.”

“Okay by me.” There was no place else Myriah would rather be. If only they could get married soon, but they’d already agreed to wait until they finished medical school. Anthony said it was best. It seemed so very far away, but she trusted his judgment.

“You suppose I’ll ever get over my God complex?” he asked, his tone self-mocking.

“I’m sure God will remind you who’s really in charge when you need it.”

“Or you will.” Anthony laughed.

“If I have to.” Myriah lifted her head from his shoulder to grin at him, her gaze meeting his as lightning flashed. Thunder rumbled through the canyons below them.

His smile faded. Though she couldn’t see the look in his eyes, she felt the shift in his breathing and new tension tighten the body tucked close to her side.
